The week’s challenge topic is Monument. Here is a gallery of monument photos I have featured in the past, plus a couple of new ones.

The Boston area of the U.S. has a lot of history, though we are really a “young” nation compared with Europe. So, none of these monuments are really “old.”

The Library at Peacefield is from the 1800s.

So too, is the statue of Washington in the Public Gardens.

The original “Mayflower” that brought the pilgrims to America is long gone; the Mayflower II is a replica built in the 1950s.

This week’s Photo Challenge Topic is Street Life.

I don’t go into “The City” (meaning Boston) much, but yesterday I ventured to Plymouth (of the Pilgrims fame), one of my favorite towns. I went to attend a reception for a photo show at the Art Center there. I was hoping to take some photos at the same time, but it was extremely cold and rainy.

This is what I got: one person without an umbrella or rain coat, hurrying down the street, sticking close to the buildings in an effort to get less wet.

In the summer and fall this little town is invaded by visitors not only from the US, but from all over the world. It has a lovely harbor and it is a beautiful place, but trying to go there during tourist season can be a daunting experience. Offseason it is fun to wander around because of the mixture of old and new. If you look down alleys you can find gems like this old tree.

The distance picture doesn’t really show how big the trunk looks so I took a closer view of the roots.  I’ll have to go back there and take a more “planned” photo when I am not getting wet and cold!

Last year the photo exhibit was a week later and the weather was better. This is a photo I took last year walking from the art center down to the water.

This week’s photo challenge topic is Windows. I don’t find parking lots particularly interesting (and I don’t think my blogger friends would either) so I chose to spare everyone pictures of the view outside my apartment windows. Instead, I’m sharing some recent photos I took of some windows with a view (taken from the outside).

The first once was taken during my recent ocean walk. There’s a small reflection of me taking the picture in the second panel. It looks like it could be mountains, but it is Plymouth bay.

The other two are windows at Norman Rockwell’s studio in Stockbridge. The studio was closed for the winter so we could only look at the outside. It was moved from its original spot in town to the grounds of the museum. It now looks out over the river and has a mountain view the artist would have enjoyed if he had ever worked there. You can see trees and a mountain view reflected.

It’s hard to see the view reflected in the tiny window, but I thought it was very picturesque with the eagle over it.

In keeping with the New Year, the topic of this week’s challenge is Beginning.

New Year’s Day I went on my first photography “meetup.” I signed up for the group on the  Meetup web site late last year, but I hadn’t been able to find time to attend any of the events except a photography show.

New Year’s Day dawned sunny, but very cold. It would have been easy to just stay warm in my home, but I had resolves to go out picture-taking at least once a week in 2014, despite the weather (so I will have plenty of pictures to share with you bloggers).

We began our meander at a marshy park where there was free parking.

There were only 9 of us, but I had a great time. The small group was nice; we talked and walked along the waterfront in Plymouth. You can see how bundled up we were.

In the beginning the only others we encountered were seagulls.

We passed the bridge to the jetty…too cold to walk out there.

We finally reached the harbor, where there was some ice between the boats.

After 1 1/2 hours, the extra hearty souls kept going, but three of us walked back to our cars, where we saw some other bundled-up walkers just beginning.

I’ve been absent from Jake’s Challenge the last couple of weeks, but I’m back! His topic this week is Tourist Attraction…what a great topic, Jake!

Last fall my cousin and her daughter came to visit from Colorado. They were only in Massachusetts a couple of days, but we managed to hit a couple of the big tourist attractions for my area: Plymouth (where the Pilgrims landed) and Quincy (birthplace of two U.S. Presidents).

We saw the Mayflower II, but we didn’t have time to go on the ship. It is a replica, as the original ship has been gone a long time!

On the day they left, we visited President John Adams home, Peacefield. President John Quincy Adams was born there and built a library on the grounds after his father had died. The library houses the bible made famous in the movie, “Amistad.”  It was stolen years ago and recovered in a local gym locker!
