This week’s topic is juxtaposition. I took this picture over the summer at a mall. I didn’t think about it when I took it, but I found it humorous after the fact. Attack of the giant flower!

Cee’s Fun Foto topic this week is Found in Nature.

Here are some things I found in nature during a recent walk at Norris Reservation.

Mossy Birch

Mossy Birch

Birch trees are my favorite type of tree: the patterns in their peeling bark unique as snowflakes, fascinating as a life-worn face. Each tree is like a piece of modern art.

The Weekly Photo Challenge topic is Family. I believe in unconventional families, so I’m going to respond to the topic with an unconventional post. I believe we have many “families” throughout our lives: biological families, work families, church families, etc., but the dearest family can sometimes be the one made up of our closest friends.

I love my biological family very much, but there were many times in my life that I felt very different from them. It’s hard to be the only girl amongst 6 boys and feel like you fit in. I think you find your “natural” family as you go through your life and meet people with the same interests.

Rarely do members of the same family grow up under the same roof.

One of my best friends is a childhood friend. We have been friends for 50 years. I don’t have children, but her daughter is the closest thing to my own daughter that I can have, not only because she is the daughter of a beloved friend, but because we have a LOT in common. She is a bright, thoughtful young woman who loves art, animals, and taking pictures…the same things that I love! Lately the three of us have spent a lot of time together, taking walks and taking pictures. So…I’m sharing pictures of this special “family.”

This week’s photo challenge topic is Windows. I don’t find parking lots particularly interesting (and I don’t think my blogger friends would either) so I chose to spare everyone pictures of the view outside my apartment windows. Instead, I’m sharing some recent photos I took of some windows with a view (taken from the outside).

The first once was taken during my recent ocean walk. There’s a small reflection of me taking the picture in the second panel. It looks like it could be mountains, but it is Plymouth bay.

The other two are windows at Norman Rockwell’s studio in Stockbridge. The studio was closed for the winter so we could only look at the outside. It was moved from its original spot in town to the grounds of the museum. It now looks out over the river and has a mountain view the artist would have enjoyed if he had ever worked there. You can see trees and a mountain view reflected.

It’s hard to see the view reflected in the tiny window, but I thought it was very picturesque with the eagle over it.

In keeping with the New Year, the topic of this week’s challenge is Beginning.

New Year’s Day I went on my first photography “meetup.” I signed up for the group on the  Meetup web site late last year, but I hadn’t been able to find time to attend any of the events except a photography show.

New Year’s Day dawned sunny, but very cold. It would have been easy to just stay warm in my home, but I had resolves to go out picture-taking at least once a week in 2014, despite the weather (so I will have plenty of pictures to share with you bloggers).

We began our meander at a marshy park where there was free parking.

There were only 9 of us, but I had a great time. The small group was nice; we talked and walked along the waterfront in Plymouth. You can see how bundled up we were.

In the beginning the only others we encountered were seagulls.

We passed the bridge to the jetty…too cold to walk out there.

We finally reached the harbor, where there was some ice between the boats.

After 1 1/2 hours, the extra hearty souls kept going, but three of us walked back to our cars, where we saw some other bundled-up walkers just beginning.
